The Back Roads of Alberta |

Departing Drumheller, we decided to see the backroads of Alberta. From Three Hills to Trochu, we finally reached our first rest spot in Torrington, home of the famed (or infamous) "Gopher Hole Museum," which describes itself as "a whimsical portrayal of daily life in our tranquil village." |

About 40 diaramas display stuffed, dressed gophers in creative settings, with appropriate captions. At left, the caption is "Take a photograph of him. He reminds me of your uncle." |

The sign in the background says "Torrington Village Office. The poster in front reads "G.A.G.S. Gophers Against Getting Stuffed." [Left] "This one is needed for the museum." [Right] "Save the endangered species." |

This one had no caption. I just loved the painting. Note the Rockies in the background.

As we went back out on the road, the Rockies really were distantly visible at last, as seen from the highway in Rocky Mountain House. The flat, stretching prairie was giving away to the promise of mountains. |
