Notre Dame de la Major Church Creche and Place de la Major

When in a small town with a huge historic district, where do you park? Well, in Arles, if you can figure out how to get past the pylons which block the streets (they sink in to the ground if you have a residential ID card or code, which we didn't have), the best parking seems to be at Place de la Major, right outside the church. Enter the city gates from the direction of the train station, take a right, but then veer toward the left, to the Arena, go to the left of the Arena, then circle back right, and you can then go up the hill to the parking lot at Place de la Major (where I think we always found a parking spot!).

One late afternoon, when we did the circuit, we noticed the church was open and people were entering. It seems that every Christmas, the church displays a HUGE nativity scene, with a Provencal cast. It was quite charming, and well attended.

Next to the church is a small open plaza, overlooking the Plains of Crau, toward Montmajour Abbey and the mountains. Descending the steep stairway next to the church takes you down to one of the main streets, Emille Coombe, where the weekly market is held (and where Hertz is located).
