I had SO little luck in the Camargue! This wetlands, where the Rhone empties into the Mediterranean, is considered one of the world's great bird-watching venues. I finally saw flamingos in the wild (below), but not a lot else. The birds were too far away, it was too windy, or there were too many people around. It was an intriguing area (to me). I wonder why the graffiti writer (below) is ashamed of the Camargue here. The very flat tidal marshes were split by hundreds of very bumpy, somewhat dangerous roads. We made it down a few, but backed out of a few as well. And we never did find a route to any of the lighthouses (I kept telling Tom the map showed bike paths, but he didn't believe me, so we kept trying. Thank goodness we didn't drive the rental car into the water, or break an axle on the giant potholes on the dirt roads!)
In addition to the birds, the Camargue is noted for white horses, wild bulls (and steaks), Camargue rice, and salt. It is also a very popular fishing destination, and I have read that in the summer the mosquitos will carry you off if you aren't careful.
