Painted Hills Unit, John Day Fossil Beds |
Absolutely one of the most stunningly beautiful places I have ever been in my life, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. This was our second stop in the John Day Fossil Beds, the Painted Hills Unit. These dramatic hills are a result of volcanic activity, and the colors represent different minerals in the ash composition.

Finally, we reached the third part, the Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds, which has the main visitors center and a very nice, small but informative museum. Next on our itinerary, the town of John Day, followed by the Diamond Loop Scenic Tour.
