Notre Dame de la Major Church |
|
On Dec. 24, our first full day in Arles, I woke up about 11; Tom was still asleep. So I decided to go for a walk around the neighborhood. At the end of our street, I found this marvelous pile of rock, a 12th Century Romanesque church called Notre Dame de la Major. I immediately fell in love with it. That morning, it was locked, but later I was able to go in and enjoy the Gothic arches and simple stained glass windows.
I was constantly amazed at how different the church appeared, depending on the sunlight. And the madonna and child on the steeple just captures the aura of Arles.
We enjoyed these views frequently, as the plaza in front of the Church was the best place to park in Arles!
