Inside Les Arénes |
|
The views from inside the Arena were as impressive as the outside or exterior views. The huge red ring in the center clearly marked the fighting area. The dark underchambers seemed to harbor ghosts of bygone gladiators. And the views over the top walls were never-endingly spectacular. Later, when we visited the Arles antiquities museum (archeological museum), we found very illustrative models of many of Arles' major structures, along with historical views of how the structure was used during the Dark Ages. The Arena was turned into a fortress during the early medieval period, with castles, churches, and homes built into the interior. Compare this with the open model of the original structure, which has a removable roof for sunshine or rain protection! But wherever you walked, you ended up taking the stairs, and they were sometimes steep--as shown in this walk down from the top tower.
