Théâter Antique

The Roman Theater is just a partial shell of its original self, having served as the "quarry" for Arles builders for many centuries. Although not well preserved, it still serves its original purpose today, hosting plays and music events for current Arles residents.

The theater originally held almost as many as the Arena, and the museum models show how massive it was in its prime. Just a small portion (including the proscenium floor of gray and pink marble) is still extant.

Remnants of past glory

I can't emphasize how useful I found the architectural models in the museum. They really did a terrific job in helping place these venues into context. The Antiquities Museum deserves great credit for these miniature reconstructions.
