Highlights of Downtown Arles

Almost every day we weren't out travelling, at some point we would walk dowtown. Whether it was to get cash at an ATM, buy some bread, pick up groceries for dinner, or just to walk around, the downtown parts of Arles were always enjoyable to stroll.

From Place du Republic, with its silver Christmas trees and beautiful Church of St. Trophime (below), to the historic Place du Forum, with the statue of Mistral the poet and the brightly colored buildings and outdoor restaurants (right), the downtown areas were an amazing blend of architecture, color, and people-watching.

If you walked a bit past the Place du Forum toward the Roquette district (the old blue collar neighborhood), you would ultimately come to Place de l'Antonelle and the Rue des Porcelets (photo at right). Nice butcher shop, deli, cheese shop, wine shops, bakery--everything one could want.

Back in Place du Forum, the most colorful attraction is the yellow Cafe at Night (Le Cafe la Nuit), immortalized by Van Gogh.
