| Hradcany Castle | |
| The castle itself was a sprawling complex of buildings, spanning many centuries and many architectural styles. We visited on two different days, staying later on one day to see it at night (photos on a following page). |

The main courtyard led to a historic gate that was part of the oldest structure on the castle. In front of the gate are the honor guards, who seemed to be the most popular photographic target of tourists. (I was not quite as interested when I learned they were a modern addition, added in about 1989 to appeal to tourists.) Tom was bemused (and not pleased) by the massive pin-shaped flag poles; they seemed out of place and too modern. |

The purple building in the background is the current home of government of the Czech Republic (the president's home and offices). As one entered the second courtyard, there was a very dark passage which led to an astounding view of the towers of St. Vitus Cathedral, towering over the roof lines of the castle. |
