Petrin Park and Stefanik Observatory

Petrin Hill is the large central park on the hill overlooking Old Town. Once it was covered in vineyards, but today is a terraced woodland, with an observation tower built to model the Eiffel Tower.

You have the option to take a funicular (inclined railcar) up the slope (price: about $2). It stops in the shadow of the tower.

The Petrin Tower is closed at night in the winter, so we were not able to climb it. However, walking around the park on a snowy evening, we did encounter wonderful fireworks, and then, out of nowhere, the Stefanik Observatory!

After our private observatory tour, we walked (carefully) down the icy, snowy paths to the river level. On the way, we passed all sorts of interesting garden buildings, a restaurant, an art gallery specializing in magic, and wonderful statuary like the one at right.
