Inside El Escorial

Inside, the rooms varied from basic to the grandiose. The rooms of the king tended to be somewhat spartan (not many fireplaces). The rooms of the religious orders (below) tended to be a great deal more luxurious.

The most interesting room was perhaps the library, with an awesome collection of ancient texts, wonderful maps and globes, interesting old pictures, and an amazing ceiling.

After walking through the chilly rooms, it felt good to sit in the sunshine outside, before we decided to walk into the little town, San Lorenzo.
