Milwaukee Art Museum

What an amazing design for the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM), by the architect Santiago Calatrava....

Shaped somewhat like a boat, with a raised sail that opens and closes like wings, this is a wonderful space. The grand entry hall (photos below) is breath-taking, and even the hallways to the art galleries have a cool serenity.

The art collection is also nice, thankfully. There is a good representation of Georgia O'Keefe, and I particularly enjoyed gallery 14, devoted to the "School of the Eight" (which I had never heard of). I really liked the art of Robert Henri, "leader" of this group.

There was also a very thorough and colorful special exhibition called "Posters of Paris: Toulouse-Lautrec & His Contemporaries" running while we were there. Although crowded, the huge display of colorful posters from about 1880 to 1910 were eye-opening. I particularly liked the circa-1900 industrial posters for bicycles, cars, and similar products. Too bad photos weren't allowed.
